Emergency Medicine is the medical speciality dedicated to the initial stabilization, diagnosis, and treatment of the acutely ill. It also deals with prehospital care and coordination among multiple specialities/clinicians or community resources.
The ED team is multidisciplinary (emergency physicians, EMS nurses and other support staff), working together toward achieving positive health outcomes for the patient. The emergency team members require broad knowledge and procedural skills, often including surgical procedures, trauma resuscitation, advanced cardiac life support and advanced airway management.
Patient care quality and outcome primarily depend on the effective teamwork of skilled team members, including doctors and paramedics. The EMS course offers focused, in-depth training to nursing graduates handling medical and surgical emergencies. The course is a two-year postgraduate program outlined to gain more practical skills and knowledge on medical and surgical emergencies both in-hospital and out-hospital scenarios.
The differentiating point of a world-class hospital is its ability to manage acute medical situations, whether it be at the social level in the form of disasters, pandemics etc or at the personal level in the form of pre-hospital emergencies, intrahospital life-threatening conditions like cardiac arrest etc. Emergency Medicine is the department that spearheads these efforts and as such forms the face of the hospital. The performance of the emergency team and thereby the medical outcome depends wholly on the team dynamics of the concerned staff which in turn depends on their functional knowledge as much as their soft skills. EMS course equips its students to manage all emergencies both at the macroscopic as well as microscopic level.
The EMS course is a two-year course for Bsc Nursing graduates, comprising one-year training and a one-year internship. The program affiliated with Jain university as the Emergency Medical Services Postgraduate Certificate Program. The course emphasises practical/hands-on experience and industry-specific skills (BLS, ACLS, PALS, NALS, ITLS, ATLS etc.), so the trainee can acquire and practise the skills that will apply daily in the Emergency room.
The EMS course is vocational training rather than a theory-focused program. The curriculum focuses on making the candidate fit for facing and caring for critically ill patients through bedside teaching, simulation training, lectures etc. The course design emphasises certain areas like managing life-threatening conditions, interpreting investigation results, high stake-communication, and professional behaviour, making the candidate efficient in clinical practice.
It is a two-year program.
First-year focuses on theory and specific skills training (BLS, ACLS, ITLS, etc.). It divides into 12 modules.
Peripheral rotational posting in major critical areas of the hospital; ICUs (one month), OT(two weeks), LR (two weeks) and the optional posting like step-down ICU or CSSD etc. (one month)
The candidate has to maintain a logbook.
Exam at the end of every module with objective type questions (50 MCQ); 80% marks are required to appear in the final theory exam (200 marks).
The final practical exam will have four stations (200 marks)
Score more than 80% (theory and practical separately) are eligible for a one-year internship.
Final score >90% of total marks considered as the first class, 80-89% of a full mark regarded as second class
Second-year focuses on internship.
Admission will take place twice a year (June and December).
